Nebraska Licensure Information and Requirements
For the most up-to-date information regarding Nebraska licensure information, requirements, fees, and more, visit Nebraska Department of Human Health and Services or call (402) 471-4376.
Licensure Requirements
Nebraska is part of the Nurse Licensure Compact, which means that if you received a license from another compact state, you will not need a Nebraska license to sign on for a Nebraska travel nurse job.
RNs and LPNs who do not have a license from a compact state must apply for licensure by endorsement in Nebraska. To qualify, you must:
- Be licensed in another state.
- Have graduated from an approved nursing program.
- Have passed an approved examination (NCLEX, SBTPE, CNA licensure exam).
- Have met one continuing competency requirement.
- Be a U.S. citizen, legal U.S. immigrant, or live/work in the U.S. lawfully.
- Have passed an english-language proficiency exam, if applicable.
- Have transcripts evaluated and approved, if applicable.
- If your legal state of residence is part of the NLC, you need to either be in the process of moving to Nebraska or a non-compact state or be ineligible for a multistate license.
APRNs applying for licensure by endorsement must provide the following:
- Application for licensure
- Any associated fees
- Proof of citizenship
- Proof of age
- Background check
- Proof of national certification
- Proof of an active RN license
- Verification of Original License
- An official nursing transcript received by mail directly from the institution maintaining the record
Travel nurses waiting for endorsement who have an active nursing license in another state may apply for a temporary license. This license is valid for 60 days or until the expiration date of your current state’s license.
Licensure Fees
In most cases, the licensure fees in Nebraska are $123. However, there are circumstances where this fee amount will change. Check here to see all licensing fees for different situations.
An additional background check fee and fingerprinting fee may be required.
Nurse Licensure Compact Status
Nebraska participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). Working as a travel nurse in an NLC state allows nurses not to have to apply for licensure within the state and takes away the worry of having to deal with licensure renewals and fees.
Is Nebraska a Walk-Through State?

- Graduated from a nursing program in more than two years but less than five years and completed at least 20 contact hours of continued education from an approved provider within two years. These contact hours can be completed in person or via internet courses or home study.
OR
- Have graduated from a nursing program within the last two years.
- Completed an approved refresher course within the last five years.
- Obtained/maintained current certification in a nursing specialty granted by a nationally recognized certifying organization.
